Object identification notes

The decorative approach of the painting and the graphic line are evidence that 15th-16th century art tended to the primitives and popular culture; the employment of big decorative spots is a manner characteristic. The painting is vivid, the color range is dense; the decorative spots are big. The figure dominates the composition; the proportions are shortened and this gives the impression of ponderousness; the saint occupies virtually two thirds of the space of the painting.

Description

The patron St. Nicholas of Myra in Lycia is depicted in full size and full face in the central field. The saint wears a pink ochre phelonion; the omophorion is white, ornamented with blue crosses. St Nicholas blesses with his right hand; he holds an open scroll with writing on it in his left hand. His face has features that are characteristic of the typological portrait.
