Description

St. John the Baptist is depicted full length and 3/4 face. The angle, the strangely placed feet and the overall impression of the figure suggest tension, which is reinforced by the prominent graphic treatment. The saint has universal typological features. He wears a blue leather garment and an olive green cloak. He holds a cross and an open scroll with a writing from the Bible in his left hand. The platter with the head of the hermit is below. There is a tree to the right of the cross; there is a Blessing Christ turned to John the Baptist over the tree in circular light blue halo.

Iconographical technique: Tempera

Base material: Wood

The icon has an inset base and a broad-segmented frame in red. The background is golden; the lower half is bright green, with reddish-brown landscape.
