Description

Christ is portrayed seated on a throne against a sky-blue background. In his left hand he is holding a book, and with his right hand he is blessing.

Iconographical technique: Tempera

The technique is a distemper painting, combined with gilding and velaturas. The garments of Christ are painted with a basic tone, using a brightened additional tone, as well as dark-blue, almost black painted pleats for the modelling of the garment. The fleshy parts (face, hands and feet) are painted with a dark paint, consisting of ochre and black pigments, and are modelled with a lighted ochre pigment. There are no brilliances, both on the fleshy parts and on the garments. The aureole of Christ and the throne are gilded with gold-leaf. The throne is decorated in the velatura method with floral and geometrical ornaments. The icon's inner frame is coated with silver and laid over it is a silver velatura.

Base material: Wood

The base is a softwood panel, reinforced with an additionally inserted beam. The reverse side of the panel has not been smoothed and has been left in the condition when it had been sawn. The ground coat is of plaster, about 0,5 mm thick.
