Description

The composition is developed after the traditional cliche. The Holy Mother of God is on the death bed. Around her are the twelve apostles. The icon-painter has here used the method of the isocephaly in the portraying of a greater number of saints and other figures of the Church. Painted in the center is Christ in radiance, blessing, holding the soul of the Holy Mother of God. In front of the death bed is St. Archangel Michael, cutting off the hands of the Jew Hiephonius - a frequently treated subject in the iconography on this theme.

Iconographical technique: Tempera

Base material: Wood

The latter is a handmade softwood panel, reinforced by means of an inserted beam. The ground coat is of plaster, laid unevenly on the front part of the base.

State, restoration traces and comments

The painting and the varnish are badly spoiled, and there are traces of overpaintings, made at a later time.
