Description

The different icon scenes can be regarded as independent and complete compositions. Each one of them is decorated with a rich Barogue ornamentation. Painted in the center of the icon is the Crucifix. It is surrounded in the corners by the Four Evangelists. On the upper central part is depicted God the Father, on the bottom central part - the Mourning of Christ, and on the left and right sides, respectively - the Pilate's Court (a very rare scene for the Bulgarian iconography. It was probably influenced by the Renaissance and Baroque pictures), and the Ascension of Christ. The year 1818 is inscribed on the icons's bottom edge, below the Scene of the Mourning of Christ.

Iconographical technique: Combined

The technique of painting is a combined one, with a rich gilding and velaturas. The figures are finely and delicately modelled. The varnish cover is applied thinly and evenly.

Base material: Wood

The icon's base is of two softwood panels, joined by means of two inserted beams. The ground coat is of plaster, laid thinly.
