Description

Saint Spyridon is portrayed full face, in waist-lengtl against a blue background. In his bent to his chest right hand he is holding a tile, and in his left one - a book. In the bad ground, painted next to his right hand, is a serpent in a vertical position which, according to the legends about his miracles, had been turned by the saint into gold.

Iconographical technique: Oil

The technique of execution is oil painting with gilding. The pleats of the saint's garment are painted with a red pigment, applied by the velatura method. The iconography is a primitive one, executed rough with semi-oil pigments. The varnish cover is laid evenly an thinly.

Base material: Wood

The icon's base is a one-piece softwood panel, reinforced by means of two inserted in its back beams. The ground co is of plaster, about 1,2 mm thick.
